A Hulu Original series about true-crime podcast lovers, who eventually do the podcast on a murder that takes place in the building where they live. It’s a true murder mystery with a comedy and musical genre blended in it like the water blends with the Milk. And you just can’t separate them now.

Charles, Oliver, and Mabel

Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman. Acted very well by the trio of Steve Martin [Charles Haden Savage], Martin Short [Oliver Putnam], and Selena Gomez [Mabel Mora]. Also, shout out to the composer Siddhartha Khosla who has given the classic mystery-comedy-musical score in this series.

True Crime

Charles, Oliver, and Mabel bond over a shared love of true crime. As the fire alarm evacuates the whole Arconia building one night a fellow resident dies. Together they decide to solve this murder mystery while recording a podcast about it. Charles is a semi-retired actor in the detective series Brazzos. While Oliver is a Broadway director who is struggling with poor financial conditions. Mabel is pursuing her design career while living in her aunt’s apartment to do refurnishing.

Who is Tim Kono?

So the man who dies that night is Tim Kono. Now to start with the podcast the trio must know about the victim and the first question that comes to mind is Who is Tim Kono? As they attend the building meeting they know that no one in the building has any information about Tim Kono and on top of that everyone hates him. Although Mabel has some past with Tim which starts to unravel.

How Well Do You Know Your Neighbors?

After knowing very little about Tim Kono, the next question is: How well do you know your neighbors? It means they have to make the suspect list and to do that they need to know about the neighbors. Howard Morris becomes their suspect as he is a cat lover and his cat dies on the same night of Tim Kono’s death. Oliver applies his theater skills to analyze the suspect list while Mabel and Charles question Morris.

The Sting

Some events play the role to point out that the prime suspect is now the famous singer Sting who actually lives in Arconia. The trio seeks advice from renowned podcast host Cinda Canning of All is Not Ok in Oklahoma. Somehow they manage to meet Sting and find out the connection between Sting and Tim Kono.

Twist

A new character comes into the story now, who is Oscar, the old friend of Mabel. Meanwhile, Oliver and Charles suspect that Mabel is hiding something from them. Both follow Mabel and Oscar from the New York streets to Long Island. Eventually, they meet in a tattoo shop to reveal all the past secrets of Mabel, Tim, and Oscar.

To Protect and Serve

Mabel brings Oscar to her home who is indeed her childhood friend. The story moves around detective Williams who is the main lead on the case. She soon starts to have doubts about the case which she closed as a suicide case. Teddy Dimas who is the only sponsor of the podcast calls Charles and Oliver to give more money to continue their work as the show is now a hit.

The Boy From 6B

Now comes the story of a boy who is deaf from birth and the son of Teddy Dimas. Theo starts to spy on Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. As the events play out the trio soon finds out that there are ongoing jewel smuggling activities in the building. Not only that but Theo is also connected with the past of Zoe who was the girlfriend of Oscar. Soon the podcast becomes risky for Oliver and Mabel as they both have death threats from a jewel smuggler. Meanwhile, Charles enjoys a romantic time with the Bassoonist of an Arconia, Jan.

Fan Fiction

With the lurking death threat and a warning to end the podcast with the conclusion of Tim has done suicide, the trio meets with detective Williams. Now they have to conclude the theory of Who? How? Why? And Why Now? As they fail to come up with theories, Oliver brings in the fans of the podcast in the group to reach the conclusion. And at the end, they release the final episode of the podcast, and the detective captures the criminals. But…

Double Time

The residents of Arconia soon become upset with the trio because of the negative publicity of the building. Soon some of the evidence suggests that the actual killer is still on the loose and the one who was captured hasn’t killed Tim Kono! An old stunt double from Charles’s show visits him and sheds some light on his past while Jan suffers an attack from the killer.

Open and Shut

In the finale of the season Charles, Oliver, and Mabel chase the loose ends and the true mastermind behind the murder of Tim Kono while putting their lives in danger.

The series is like an onion where you peel off one layer after another. The same happens in the series as the story unfolds the new characters come into the spotlight and their story plays. It was like listening to the podcast while at the same time I am watching some super hit broadway show.

If you think it’s an end then you are wrong because get ready season 2 is coming with the new podcast Only Murderers In The Building.

Note: Know your neighbors first and if you ask me which character I like the most then my answer is Oliver because he is the funniest, most charming, and non-intelligent character! I also liked Mabel as a Hardy Boys fan and her paintings were also great. Charles is an unsocial person, like me!

See you till the next story!
